The 4 C’s of Diamonds: All you need to know about the Quality and the specifications

The 4 C’s of diamonds stands for -Cut, -Color, -Clarity and -Carat.Each one of them plays a huge role in a diamond’s beauty. The grades a diamond carries in these four areas give a clear idea of the diamond’s quality, and by extension the right price you should be willing to pay.

So what are the 4 c`s of a diamond?

Cut

A diamond’s cut, its shape and facets is what makes it direct more light through the crown. The more faceted the cut, the greater the sparkle.A diamond with a depth that`s too shallow or too deep will allow light to escape through the sides or the bottom of the stone. The most famous shape and cut, according to the Cape Town Diamond Museum, is the round brilliant, with 57 facets.

Clarity

The clarity refers to the diamond`s tiny markings or tiny flaws in other words. The clearer or more flaw free the diamond is the more brilliant and valuable it becomes. Jewelers and gemologists use a scale from FL (flawless) to VVS (very, very slightly included) to VS ( very slightly included) to SI (slightly included) to I (included), with number gradations for each category, to rate the clarity.

Carat

A diamond’s weight, is measured in carats. It`s connected to the size that your Diamond has.The price per carat increases according to a diamond`s size since large stones are of course rarer. Although size is an important factor in determining the value of a diamond, keep in mind that the cut, color, and clarity are equally important.

Color

Diamonds come in many colors and are categorized as either icy white (colourless) to a light yellow. These variations make a major difference in diamond quality and price. Depending on the hue and intensity, a stone’s color can either diminish or enhance its value, with the Icy White (colourless) being the most valuable colour.
